Skin Inc., a customizable serum-based Japanese skin care brand, is rolling out the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light Device ($285 at Sephora) in the US next month. Founder Sabrina Tan offered Happi some insight into the technology behind this new beauty tool.

Happi: The heart of Skin Inc. is customization. How does this new device fit in with this concept?

Sabrina Tan: Skin Inc.'s Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light allows you to turn on the power of custom light therapy, taking custom skin care treatments out of the spa and putting them into the hands of consumers. Now you can customize your facial with skin mapping in the comfort of your own home. You can soothe and calm breakouts and oil production on your T-zone with the blue light, brighten under eyes and acne scars with the Yellow light and use the ted light for an all-over improvement in collagen and skin elasticity. The Tri-Light even furthers the way you can customize your skin care products because each LED light color works even better with a corresponding serum. For example, the blue light and Vitamin C Serum are a perfect match, the red and Collagen Serum reinforce each other’s effects….Additionally, the device is contoured to fit a woman’s hand.

Happi: This device has different settings—can you explain the differences in the light technology for each?

Tan: BLUE—specific wavelengths of blue light target the strain of bacteria that plays a pivotal role in causing acne. It also works to calm and soothe the inflammation. RED—Wavelengths of red light help improve the skin barrier by boosting collagen production. YELLOW—Wavelengths of yellow light improves photo rejuvenation of the skin and enhances lymph and blood circulation.

Happi: What are the skin benefits a user will see at each setting?

Tan: The red light focuses on anti-aging, helping to tighten, firm, tone, plump, sculpt, increase collagen production and alleviate fine lines and wrinkles. The yellow light corrects skin tone by treating hyperpigmentation and improving red and vascular skin. The blue light targets the P. acnes bacteria that cause mild to moderate acne. It soothes inflammation, controls breakouts, tones redness and calms skin sensitivity. All three lights will help optimize formulas by boosting absorption of active ingredients and V-Sculpt, allowing you to achieve lifted facial contours and reduce water retention.

Happi: What makes this device more user-friendly too?

Tan:  The device is battery operated, fits into the palm of your hand and shuts off automatically after 10 minutes, but you can also customize the length of time you get with each light.  If you feel you need to revive dull skin for a brighter complexion, you can choose to have a longer run time on the yellow light; if you have a breakout you can choose to spend more time using the blue light etc. There’s a face map that comes with the Tri-Light device, so users can see which color to use on different areas of the face for optimal results.

Happi: Who do you see as the target customer for Skin Inc.?

Tan: The great thing about Skin Inc's Tri-Light device is that it is for everyone; men and women of all ages and ethnicities and targets everything from anti-aging to brightening to breakout prone skin. The persons who love the tool are the people who desire results without the fuss. They care about skin care and results but need solutions that fit into their busy fulfilling lives.

Happi: What can we expect from the brand next?

Tan: Skin Inc. will continue to push the envelope and be the leader in customized skin care. You will see products get smarter and more targeted to your individual needs and one day we will hopefully have technology that empowers you to know everything about your skin on any given day, from water levels, to collagen levels etc., as it's so important to have products that work with your own unique chemistry.
